라인마그네틱은 2000년대 초반부터 우리가 이름을 들으면 알만한 유수의 진공관 앰프 브랜드 들의 제품들을 직접 OEM제작하던 업체였다. (OEM된 브랜드명은 당사자간 계약관계에 의거, 공식적 노출은 금지되어 있음) 라인마그네틱이 특히 중점을 두었던 분야는 웨스턴 일렉트릭(Western Electric)의 정통 진공관 회로의 완벽한 복원이었는데, 그 시도가 있은 지 근 10여년 만에 놀라운 결실들이 하나 둘씩 우리 눈앞에 나타나고 있는터, 소개하고자 하는 LM-219 IA 인티앰프는 그 정점에 해당되는 제품이다.

우선 "명실상부 최고의 진공관 앰프"라 칭해지는 웨스턴 일렉트릭의 키워드를 살펴보자. 1931년에 발표된 RCA로부터 시작된 845출력관, 그리고 이845관을 드라이빙하기에 최적으로 평가받는 300B관, 그리고 이와 함께 더블 스테이지 드라이버 정석 구성인 310A관의 추가.... 게다가 트랜스 구동에 기반한 커플링 콘덴서가 없는 구성. 이 모든 것을 한꺼번에 구현해낸 진공관 앰프가 바로 라인마그네틱 LM-219IA 이다. 또한 진공관 앰프의 핵심 기술 중 하나인 출력 트랜스는 초 광대역 스펙을 만족하는 대형 제품이 들어가있으며, 이 때문인지 전통적인 싱글 출력관 구성이라고 해도 고음역의 감쇄나 저음역의 커트는 전혀 느낄 수 없다. 한 마디로 물량투입에 있어서는 현재 시점 동급 제품 기준으로 따라올 수 있는 경쟁기 자체가 전무.

물론 무조건적인 물량투입이 라인마그테닉 LM-219IA의 모든 것은 아니다.

기본적으로 845관을 사용한 앰프가 비싼 이유는 기본 1,200V 내외의 고전압/전류를 안정적으로 다루어야 하기 때문인데, 이를 뒷받침해줄 튼실한 전원부와 검증된 회로 구성은 개개인이 마련할 수 있는 인프라에서는 불가능한 작업이다. (845관 자체가 본래 라디오 방송국 등에서의 고전류 전파 송출에 사용될만큼 프로패셔널하고 다루기 힘든 관이라는 점에 주목할 필요가 있다.) 제작자의 음악적 취향과 뉘앙스를 반영하는 파인 튜닝은 고사하고 소리라도 제대로 나오게 만들기가 매우 어려운 것이 845 출력관이다.

이 기함급 진공관 인티앰프는 채널당 A클래스, 싱글관 기준 24W의 출력을 내는데, 수치로는 감이 잘 안올것이다. 어지간한 AV리시버도 100W이상의 출력을 스펙으로 내걸고 있는 요즘에는 더더욱. 하지만 A클래스 증폭방식, 그리고 진공관의 증폭방식에 대한 이해가 있다면 이 수치가 그리 큰 의미를 가진 것이 아니라는 점에 어느 오디오파일이라도 이견은 없을 것이다. 실제로 자기 몸값보다 훨씬 비싼 ATC의 SCM100같은 대형스피커도 완벽하게 구동하는 모습은 매우 인상적이며 진공관이냐 TR이냐를 떠나 인티앰프 하나로 이보다 강력한 드라이빙을 걸어주는 물건이 있기나 할까 하는 놀라움이 앞선다.

LM-219 IA 인티앰프는 845관의 역동적인 구동력과 300B의 섬세한 질감이 절묘하게 어우러진 하모니를 자랑한다.

특정 장르에 편중되지도 않고 음량의 변화에 휘둘리지도 않으며, 말 그대로 레퍼런스로 삼을만한 신뢰성 높은 재생음을 확인할 수 있다. 소스기기나 케이블, 스피커의 매칭에 따라 매우 극적으로 소리가 바뀌는데, 진공관 앰프라고 해서 자신만의 착색과 왜곡을 더 이상 매력이라고 포장할 필요가 없는 사운드이다. 이 앰프의 소리를 기준으로 다른 모든 컴포넌트를 고르고 튜닝할 만 하다.

필자 입장에서도 솔직히 중국제 오디오라고 하면 선입관이 아직 다 가시지 않았다. 하지만 인정할 수 밖에 없는 분야가 바로 진공관 쪽이며 라인마그네틱을 포함한 몇몇 브랜드들은 이미 국내의 진공관 오디오 기술을 훨씬 앞섰다는 사실을 받아들이고 있던 차이다. 단순한 물량투입 이상의 기술력과 그에 못지 않게 중요한 음악적 튜닝 스킬은 이제 우리가 본받아 배워야 할 수준인 것이다. 라인마그네틱의 LM-219IA 인티앰프가 유일하게 가지고 있는 "중국스러운" 팩트 하나는 바로 저렴한 가격 뿐이다. 누군가가 2천만원 미만대의 분리형 앰프를 추천해 달라 한다면 필자는 1천만원대 인티앰프 임에도 불구하고 라인마그네틱 LM-219IA 를 우선적으로 고려해 보라고 권할 수 밖에 없다.

너무나도 식상한 말이지만 LM-219IA는 "소리가 참 좋다"는 말을 우선적으로 할 수 밖에 없는 인티앰프이다. 그 다음은 이 브랜드의 정통성과 웨스턴 일렉트릭에 대한 독창적인 오마쥬를 언급할 것이다.
